I’ve always heard that we are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body. But I always wondered where in scripture that proves we are spiritual beings.
What I found shocked me! Did you know that we were first created as spiritual beings before we were ever placed on this earth?
Yep, that’s right! Starting all the way at the beginning of time (in the book of Genesis) God reveals to us in his word that we are in fact spiritual beings.
I don’t know about you but I was always taught in Sunday school class and even in “big” church that God created everything in 6 days and on that 7th day he rested. I always assumed that he created male and female on this earth on the 6th day, but that is not so.
If you open your bible (I’ll wait for you, I want you to see this for yourself) or follow along with us in the scriptures below, you can plainly see that God created man and woman in the heavenly’s as spiritual beings BEFORE he placed them here on earth.
Genesis 1:27-31 27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
We were given dominion over everything
- God blessed male and female from the very beginning to have dominion over the fish of the sea, so I’m thinking those sharks in the ocean don’t have anything on me or you.
- Oh and those HUGE palmetto bugs, better known as Florida cockroaches, we have dominion over those creepy crawly things as well. 😉
What sort of animals or creepy crawly things do you have that you would like to take dominion over?
Okay we’ve established that God made male and female in his image on the 6th day right? So let’s move on to Chapter 2.
Genesis 2:4-7 4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
We were spirits before we were flesh
The first thing in these scriptures I noticed is that rain had never fallen from the sky before. As a matter of fact it states that there was a mist that came up out of the earth and watered the entire ground.
I completely understand now why everyone thought Noah was crazy and lost his mind when he said rain was going to fall from the sky.
Just think about it for a second. Back then they were use to water coming up from the ground so to even think about water falling from the sky was CRAZY. But what if it was reversed and we were told that from now on water would no longer fall from the sky but the earth would have a mist come up from it and water the ground. That would be CRAZY to us.
The biggest take away and the very thing that proves we are spiritual beings is the fact that God created us first as a spirit in the heavenly’s then breathed life into man’s nostrils making him a living, breathing human being here on this earth.
More scripture to back it up
Another scripture that backs this up is in the book of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
You see, God knew Jeremiah BEFORE he was in his mothers womb. How? How did he know him before he was a human being? Because God created us as spirit beings before he breathed life into us.
PRAISE GOD!!!
That means that each one of us born here on this earth was with our Daddy in heaven and he knows the plans he has for us even before we are placed in our mothers womb.
I don’t know about you but that gets me excited!!
